UMaine Names New Interim Athletic Director

Today at the Alfond Center, UMaine President Robert Kennedy welcomed former Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Abbott to overlook the athletic department. The Abbott family have a history at UMaine. Steve graduated from Maine Law and his father, Walt, was a head coach of the UMaine football team. Steve Abbott isn’t looking to have this position past the interim stage but is loking forward to helping bring out the best in Maine athletics.Steve Abbott – New UMaine Interim Athletic Director”I will confess, it was a little bit of a surprise when I got the call from President Kennedy, but it’s something I am very interested in. It’s very exciting for me to be in Orono. Having grown up here, having had my father play such a prominent role in this institution, my mother, my sister, my grandfather all were at school here. Orono is a special place to me. The University of Maine is special to me so for me, this is a thrill…To me the critical things are first to make sure that the athletic program continues to reflect the values of the University of Maine. I also think its important that we provide our coaches with the opportunity to win up here and we provide our student athletes a great educational opportunity through sports.”
