Job Corps Students, Staff Reach Blood Drive Milestone

Students and staff at Penobscot Job Corps in Bangor hit a milestone today in the effort to fill the need for donated blood. The school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, which it’s done four times a year, for the last three years. Today, donor number 1,000 walked through the door. Two local businesses teamed up to help celebrate the accomplishment. Bangor Cinemas and Texas Roadhouse Restaurant offered every donor a chance to win dinner and a movie for four.Former Job Corps student and current Red Cross worker Derek Backman says he understands why some people can be hesitant to donate – but it’s worth it.”Most of them, I think, are probably scared of the needle. But you save three lives with one pint. Maybe take the half-hour out of your day and save three lives. That’s pretty intense.”Folks with the American Red Cross say the summer blood supply is extremely low right now, with so many regular donors on vacation or out of town. They’re asking for any eligible donors to give.To find a blood drive near you or schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
