The Happy Couple Celebrates 70 Years

It takes hard work to make a marriage last – one Monroe couple knows all about that.In 1938 Guy and Ella Work met at a birthday party. In 1940 they got married.Today, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.They arrived in style at Anglers in Searsport to celebrate 70 years as Mr. and Mrs. Work.”Can’t believe it to tell you the truth. Can’t believe it,” says Ella. Guy adds, “Never thought we’d live that long.” Family flew in from as far away as Florida to join the happy couple for their surprise anniversary party.”It’s a great time to be able to have them here with us. It’s been a joy to have them around this long,” says their son Calvin”The couple met as teenagers back in 1938. Ella says while they were dating Guy was quite the gentleman. “Tell them how many months it was before he kissed you,” says their daughter, Jane. Ella replies laughingly, “Oh God, that was – my birthday is September – he never gave me a kiss until February! So you see, he was shy!” Ella and Guy say mutual respect and quality time together have helped them stay close over the years.Ella goes on to say, “We used to go fishing, that’s one thing we loved. We’d go boating, snowmobiling, and different stuff like that.”They’ve passed many of their secrets for a lasting love on to their three children.Their son Gary says, “I’ve learned a lot, I guess over the years by following their advice.””To take my marriage vows seriously and to have patience, it takes a lot of patience to make a marriage work,” adds Jane. “They are a great inspiration to most everybody, especially me. 70 years, that’s quite a while,” says Calvin. Gary adds, “Hopefully they’ll be around for many more years with us.”
