Mainers Protest Free Trade Agreements

About 30 people gathered in Pickering Square in Bangor Thursday afternoon to protest free trade agreements.Local workers joined together to speak out against the visit of United States Trade Representative, Ron Kirk.Kirk is a supporter of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The protestors say NAFTA-style trade deals are costing Maine tens of thousands of jobs.”I would ask him to open his eyes and see what the real impact has been. The rich are getting richer and everyone else is losing out,” said Sarah Bigney, organizer of the Maine Fair Trade Campaign.”I’ve seen closures from one employee to hundreds of employees and it’s all over the state that way,” added Mike Castaneda, President of United Steel Workers Local 11.The demonstrators say they are in favor of the Local Trade Act that Congressman Mike Michaud is supporting.
