First Court Appearance for Bates Student Arrested After Melee 

More than two months after a melee involving hundreds of students at Bates College, one of the students arrested in the incident made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.Samuel Guilford is charged with aggravated assault and refusing to submit to arrest after police said he fought with an officer.Guilford did not have to enter a plea at Thursday’s appearance.Guilford was one of 11 students charged in connection with the melee.Police said a group of students who had been drinking became unruly outside a freshman dorm on the Bates campus in May.The incident left two police officers hurt, one seriously.Police said Lewiston Sgt. Rob Ullrich suffered a broken leg in two places trying to arrest Guilford.Ullrich just returned to his job a couple weeks ago but is on light duty.
