Folks Celebrate 45th Anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare 

More than 100 folks fathered in Bangor to say happy birthday to Medicaid and Medicare.Consumers for Affordable Healthcare, Eastern Area Agency on Aging, and the Maine Primary Care Association hosted the luncheon to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the programs becoming law. Together, Medicare and Medicaid cover approximately one-third of all Mainers. “It’s a very significant event for Mainers. The improvements and changes in programs are going to be exciting and even more beneficial to Mainers,” said Christie Hager, Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, New England Region.President Lyndon B. Johnson originally signed the law creating Medicare and Medicaid on July 30, 1965.President Harry Truman and his wife were the first enrolled beneficiaries of the programs.
