Paper unemployment checks will no longer be in the mail soon – they’re being replaced by debit cards. The Department of Labor is doing away with the checks.Officials say starting next week, anyone collecting unemployment who hasn’t signed up for direct deposit will receive a Maine Automated Payment card, instead. The department started testing the idea in June.Maine’s Labor Commissioner says the cards will save the program money and are a more secure way to distribute benefits. The debit cards are free, but are subject to some fees and surcharges.
