Maine’s Graduation Numbers Dip Under New Federal Guidelines

Maine’s high school graduation rate for 2008-2009 is 80.4% under a new calculation method. On Monday the State Department of Education released the graduation rate using a newly required federal method of calculation. The new method totals the graduation rate based on the number of students who entered 9th grade at the same time and graduated in no more than four years.Because it only counts students who graduate in four years or less, the rates for most schools and for the state overall will be lower than in the previous year. Under the old method of calculation, the rate for 2007-2008 was 83.5%.
