(AP) – Maine officials have identified the military veteran who was shot by law enforcement officers during a confrontation in Augusta. Thirty-seven-year-old James Popkowski of Medway, was fatally injured Thursday. The attorney general’s office also says Togus police officer Thomas Park and Sgt. Ron Dunham of the Maine Warden Service used deadly force against Popkowski. A second warden, Joey Lefebrve, witnessed the confrontation, but did not use deadly force. An autopsy is to be conducted on Popkowski on Friday. The shooting happened within sight of the entrance of the Veterans Affairs hospital in Augusta. Attorney General Janet Mills says it’s not clear whether the officers were fired upon by the victim. Her office is investigating the shooting.
