Armed Vet Shot and Killed By Officers Near Togus

Police have shot and killed and armed military veteran near the entrance of the VA Medical Center in Togus, outside Augusta. The person who was shot has been identified as thirty-seven-year-old James Popkowski of Medway.Attorney General Janet Mills tells TV5 the shooting took place about 9 a.m. Thursday. A member of the Togus Police Department and two Game Wardens used their weapons after reports of gunfire coming from the woods. Jim Doherty, a spokesperson for Togus, says that staff were outside the center when they heard shots fired. Togus officers and Game Wardens then responded. Mill says they ordered the victim to drop his weapon.A witness, Paul Stevens, tells TV5 officers fired on a man armed with what looked like a rifle. He says about eight shots were fired, and the man fell to the ground in the woods off Route 17. An autopsy is to be conducted on Popkowski on Friday.
