Mother and Son Reunite After 57 Years

It was a reunion more than 50 years in the making.A Bangor woman was reunited to the son she gave birth to back in 1953.Etta Mae Buckley was a single woman in Charleston, West Virginia when she gave birth to a baby boy, April 16, 1953.”I wanted him to have a better home than I could have gave him.”So Etta Mae gave him up for adoption. Meanwhile that baby boy, named Vernon Thacker grew up in a loving home in Ohio.Still he wondered about his biological family “just in the back of my head. By the time I was in my 50’s I had pretty much given up.”But Etta Mae had not. So with the help of some friends she did a computer search of his name, and came up with an some addresses in Ohio. Last Christmas she sent a card to one of them.”I said I’m looking for my son and I’ve been looking for you for 57 years, and I said if you’re my son please call me.””I was really surprised to get the letter”She got the right address.”And on January 2nd, 2010 he called me and I found my son”Since then, mother and son have been speaking each week-end, and Vernon planned a trip to meet Etta Mae in Bangor.”Waiting seven months was the hard part to get up here.”Now he’s here, along with his wife and two sons. He thinks this is a great addition to his life.”I got more family now. See who I look like and who I don’t look like.”For Etta Mae, it’s a dream come true.”I didn’t think it would ever happen. It was a miracle, it was a miracle to me. It’s wonderful, it really is. The piece of my heart that was missing is there now.”
