Orono Soldier Laid to Rest 

Staff Sergeant Brandon Silk, a soldier from Orono, killed in Afghanistan last week, was laid to rest Friday.25-year-old Brandon Silk was a member of the 101st Airborne Division and was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was a crew member on a black hawk helicopter.Hundreds of people came together in Old Town to pay their final respects to the young man.A funeral was held at the United Baptist Church, followed by a procession down Stillwater Avenue. Local police and fire departments were on hand as was the governor, among other dignitaries.Silk graduated Orono High School in 2003 and we’re told he was an outstanding man who loved his family and his country. “Brandon was a great kid, a wonderful young man, who was committed to serving our country. His dad told me last night that he died doing what he loved and wanted to do, and that’s pretty special,” said Mary Drew, a friend of the Silk family.Silk’s body was laid to rest in Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town.He was killed in Afghanistan last week during what officials are calling a “hard landing”.
