State Budget Coming up Short

Maine’s budget for the next fiscal year faces a hole of 85 to 100 million dollars because of congressional refusal to authorize billions of dollars in extended stimulus aid.The budget for fiscal 2011, which starts July 1st, assumes the state will receive another 85 million dollars in stimulus money. But the state finance commissioner said Tuesday the overall impact could be up to 100 million dollars.Congress was poised to extend some stimulus funding to states through June 2011, but the measure died in the senate earlier this month. Maine and other states that counted on the money must now make up the difference in their budgets.
