UMaine Offers New Forensics Class

Some UMaine students are learning all about crime scene investigation without turning on their TV. Professor Irv Kornfield started teaching a forensics class this past year.Students have to analyze mock crime scenes with students playing the roles of victims. The fake scenes come complete with blood evidence and murder weapons. Kornfield also has medical examiners, ballistics experts, and other real life professionals speak to the class.”They can both be informed citizens and when they’re potentially on a jury pool they’ll know when there’s DNA evidence presented they’ll be able to understand it and be able to, not only explain it to their fellows, but be able to potentially look at it in a critical way,” says Kornfield. There’s about 180 students enrolled in the forensics class. Kornfield says he’s been pleased with the results.
