Report: Pilot Error Caused Helicopter Crash

A helicopter crash off Little Deer Isle last summer was caused by pilot error. That’s the finding this week from the National Transportation Safety Board’s factual report. The pilot was Scottish billionaire Irvine Laidlaw, a member of Britain’s House of Lords.Last August, he was carrying three passengers in the helicopter about 400 feet up when he began to lose altitude and crashed into the water. No one was seriously hurt.66-year-old Laidlaw is quoted in the report as saying, “the accident was totally pilot error with no mechanical malfunction.” He says he couldn’t regain control of the helicopter after it began turning faster than expected on a turn.
