Catherine Pegram

Drivers in Hancock and Ellsworth can expect some normally quiet railroad crossings to come back to life soon – which means approaching the crossings with caution. Officials with The Downeast Scenic Railroad say two crossings in Hancock and seven in Ellsworth will be fully active, starting Saturday. In Hancock, the crossings at Wyman and Washington Junction Roads will be affected. In Ellsworth, it’ll be crossings at Beal Avenue: Main, Lincoln, Park, Birch and Davis Streets and the Ellsworth High School Crossing. Officials say to be safe, drivers should always approach an active crossing expecting a train.
