No Plans to Stabilize Landslide Site in Winslow

Town officials in Winslow say the company that owns a former dam near the site of a landslide doesn’t appear to have any plans, right now, to help stabilize the area. Some of the slope behind the historic Fort Hill Cemetery gave way in April. FPL Energy is the owner of the former Fort Halifax Dam, nearby. The state Department of Environmental Protection has asked the company to work with Winslow to come up with a plan to stabilize the slope. But town manager Mike Heavener says company officials say they don’t plan to do that, since their investigation has found that that drawndown of water when the dam was removed didn’t cause the landslide.Heavener says the company has a July first deadline to respond to the DEP request. If that doesn’t happen, he says the DEP will determine the next step.
