Super Blood Drive in Brewer Draws Dozens of Donors

More than 250 people took some time out of the weekend to chill out, grill out and give the gift of life. The American Red Cross hosted it’s annual Chill ‘n Grill super blood drive at the Brewer Auditorium Saturday. The event featured a pancake breakfast that started at 8:30 a.m. Then Texas Roadhouse turned on the grills at 11 a.m. to serve donors for the rest of day.All donors could sign up for a number of giveaways, including a kayak package and Red Sox tickets. They were given t-shirts as well.Red Cross staffer Lisa Frazell says the need for Type O blood is critical right now.”The summer tends to be a more difficult time for us to collect blood so how we compensate for that is we have bigger blood drives, trying to pool people together, more staff, more histories and being able to process them that way.”The Chill ‘n Grill wrapped up at 3 o’clock and organizers expected to meet their goal of collecting 250-units of blood. Folks who came by could also find information about organ donation and signing up for a bone marrow registry. If you missed a chance to donate , you can contact the Red Cross to schedule an appointment or find a blood drive near you by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
