World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Updated 5 years ago

June 15 is ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’. Maine has one of the highest senior populations in the nation. Experts say it contributes to elder abuse being one of the fastest growing crimes. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse the majority of seniors are victimized by their own family, a reason many think the abuse goes unreported. It’s estimated that only one out of five cases of elder abuse are reported. On Tuesday members of the greater Augusta elder abuse taskforce helped celebrate seniors at the Cohen Center in Hallowell. Dozens of seniors sported ‘Elders Rock’ stickers as taskforce members distributed information on many resources that are available to help seniors. Those resources included legal services, protective services and much more.
