Folks gathered at the Bangor waterfront Monday evening for the annual flag day celebration. There were several performances to honor our nation’s flag including music from the Dirigo Wind band, dancing from the students of the Mary Drew School of Dance, and of course the national anthem, sung this year by 6th grader Rae Costlow. Two of the Bangor Troop Greeters were also present.Mary Drew, who has been dubbed the “flag lady,” organized the event and says that the celebration has a simple, but very important purpose. “To honor our flag.” Said Drew. “That’s what our country’s all about, and we have men and women in harms way, defending our flag. I think the kids need to learn how to show respect and hopefully learn to love the flag the way I do.”This is the 22nd year of the festival. There are plans for many more to come.
