Special Olympics Maine 

Hundreds of folks gathered at U-Maine in Orono today for the start of the 2010 Special Olympics.More than 1,300 athletes make up nearly 150 teams.The games started today and will last through the weekend. The athletes will also have the chance to join in on several social events.Organizers say the athletes spend months looking forward to and preparing for these games.Lisa Bird, Director of Public Relations for Special Olympics, says, “As soon as our winter games are over in January they start putting their efforts into summer games and this is really the culmination of all of their efforts.” Tomorrow’s events start at 8:30 and run through the day, ending with the Banquet of Champions and the Victory Dance.The Special Olympics wrap up on Sunday.For more information you can go to
