Former Postal Worker Sentenced for Stealing Money from Mail 

A former postal worker in Orono who admitted to stealing money out of envelopes from customers on his route was sentenced today to three years probation. 56-year-old Lawrence Custis of Lincoln was also ordered to pay back $430 dollars to his victims, along with a fine of $2,150. Custis was a letter carrier at the Old Town Post office and Orono Annex from December 2006 through April 2007. In February, he pleaded guilty to stealing cash from cards and letters. He estimated he took about $150 a week, over four months.Custis could have been sent to prison for up to five years and fined $250,000.
