The Lynx, a 122-foot replica of a war of 1812 ship, returned to Rockport harbor today for the first time since its maiden voyage. It was built and launched there in 2001. The 114 ton boat is a replica of a Navy schooner from the War of 1812. It took 25 men a little over a year to build.Fitted with period pennants and flags, even the crew wears period dress, especially when the ship is used as a teaching tool for local schools in different ports as part of the Lynx Educational Foundation. The ship has seen adventure, sailing from Hawaii and California since it left this port in 2001. It even served as a training ship for extras in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. The ship’s anchor will be dropped here throughout the weekend, and visitors are invited to come aboard. This summer, the ship will remain on the East Coast for events celebrating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.
