Fire on Long Pond

A rekindled campfire is being blamed for a fire Monday that burned a good portion of a privately owned island on Long Pond in Rome. The campfire was started on Sunday afternoon by a group of six to eight men who came to the island. The group put out the fire and left after the owners told them that the island was private property, according to Rome’s Fire Chief. The embers reportedly rekindled overnight, and the fire spread. The island’s owner noticed the flames Monday morning around 7:30 am, and called for help.Fire crews had to use boats to reach the flames. The fire burned about an acre of land.
