Keeping Downtowns Alive

Downtowns are at the heart of most cities and towns. They bring in people and stimulate the local economy. But filling empty storefronts isn’t an easy thing to do these days.Recently, Waterville’s downtown has had several shops close up. Some cite the economy, while others have shut their doors for personal reasons.Shannon haines heads up Waterville Main Street, a non profit dedicated to reviving the area.Haines says the only way downtown businesses will thrive is through the communities support. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, it’s estimated that $45 stays in the area. She says spending that same amount at a big box store means only $14 stays local.
