The case against a local man accused of stabbing a pregnant woman at a coffee shop in Bangor has been dropped. 33-year-old Jason Dean was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.A judge dismissed the case today after staff at the Riverview Psychiatric Hospital in Augusta said it was unlikely Dean would ever have the mental capability to continue the case. Dean has been at Riverview since March when the same judge said Dean was incompetent to stand trial. Dean is accused of walking into a coffee shop on Central Street last March and using a steak knife to cut the neck of a woman working behind the counter. She was treated at a local hospital and released the same day.Dean’s lawyer says Dean plans to voluntarily return to Riverview until he can get into a long-term residential program, but there’s no requirement right now for him to stay there. The judge did order the Department of Health and Human Services to go forward with involuntary commitment proceedings.
