Click It or Ticket Campaign

On Monday many of Maine’s police departments began beefed up enforcement of the state’s seat belt laws.  The Maine agencies are joining their counterparts across the county in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, aimed at increasing seat belt usage as the summer driving season begins with the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.  The two week campaign began Monday and ends on June 6.The Director of the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety,  Lauren Stewart, said 66 police departments, eleven sheriffs offices and State Police will participate in a summer long effort of increased highway safety enforcement, beginning with the seat belt campaign.  Stewart said the police departments will share in $545,272 in federal highway safety money, funneled through her agency.  In addition to the seat belt enforcement effort,  the money will be used to fund overtime to increase police patrols looking for drunk drivers, speeders and aggressive drivers.   Maine’s seat belt usage rate was 82.6% in 2009, which is very close to the national average of 83%.Stewart said, ” The last two years have been the safest on Maine roads in the past 50 years.  Much of the credit goes to the state’s police agencies for their continued efforts to make our roads safe. This year’s federal funding of over a half million dollars will continue those enforcement efforts for the entire summer driving season.”  Stewart said 159 people were killed on Maine roads during 2009 and there were 155 highway deaths in 2008 — both the safest years on Maine roads since 1959, when 136 deaths were reported.   Stewart said there have been 42 highway deaths so far this year, which compares to 44 deaths at this time during 2009.The following are the police agencies participating in the increased summer enforcement efforts and the amount of money awarded to each agency.   Androscoggin County Sheriffs Office $10,000Auburn Police Dept $9,987Augusta Police Dept $10,000Bangor Police Dept $10,000Bath Police Dept $10,070Berwick Police Dept $6,953Biddeford Police Dept $6,496Brownville Police Dept $5,068Brunswick Police Dept $8,528Calais Police Dept $7,562Camden Police Dept $6,200Caribou Police Dept $8,840Cumberland County Sheriffs Office $7,110Cumberland Police Dept $4,799Damariscotta Police Dept $6,330Dixfield Police Dept $6,072East Millinocket Police Dept $1,980Eliot Police Dept $7,468Ellsworth Police Dept $7,350Fairfield Police Dept $9,749Farmington Police Dept $6,567Fort Kent Police Dept $6,850Freeport Police Dept $2,219Fryeburg Police Dept $7,100Gardiner Police Dept $5,928Gorham Police Dept $7,524Hampden Police Dept $5,889Houlton Police Dept $5,040Kennebec County Sheriffs Office $6,225Kennebunk Police Dept $9,081Kennebunkport Police Dept $1,931Kittery Police Dept $6,847Knox County Sheriffs Office $6,400Lewiston Police Dept $9,944Lincoln County Sheriffs Office $10,000Lincoln Police Dept $5,887Lincolnville Police Dept $9,020Lisbon Police Dept $7,666Madawaska Police Dept $3,310Madison Police Dept $4,900Mexico Police Dept $3,920Milbridge Police Dept $7,200Millinocket Police Dept $5,830Mt.
