Members of the boating industry gathered in Belfast for some hands-on training that could save lives. It was conducted by the Coast Guard along with members of the Rockland fire department. The aim was to reinforce the importance of boating safety. Nearly 60 people took part, getting instruction that could come in quite handy in case of an emergency on the water. Lieutenant Jason Smilie was on-hand to help provide some of the training. “The people that operate these vessels they don’t get the opportunity to deploy a life raft or throw a ring every day,” he says, “so come game day, this will help them get ready so they can actually see how far they can throw a life ring.”Other things taught at today’s workshop included techniques for fighting on board fires.
