Maine has 36,000 family owned businesses.On Monday evening a few of those companies were honored at the 2010 Maine Family Business Awards.70 family businesses in the state were nominated. There were 18 finalists. Among them: Mardens Surplus and Salvage, Funtown Splashtown USA, and Diversified Communications: WABI’s parent company.Horace Hildreth is the chairman of the board of directors for Diversified Communications.He says the family business atmosphere allows Diversified Communications to focus on what’s important. “Being able to allow people in the company to make decision and have some independence and make things grow in an organic kind of way,” Hildreth Said following Monday’s ceremony.Three awards were given out: the Maddy Corson Award for a small family went to Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards.The Leon Gorman Award for a larger family business was given to Mardens Surplus and Salvage.And the Shep Lee Award for community service went to the G.H.M. Agency.
