First Meeting of the Aroostook Rail Advisory Task Force

Governor Baldacci’s newly created Aroostook Rail Advisory task force met for the first time Wednesday in Caribou. The 15 member panel was joined by concerned community members. They’re trying to understand the complex process of having the state potentially buy the 240 miles of tracks the Maine, Montreal and Atlantic Railroad plans to abandon. The goal of the task force is to help the Maine Department of Transportation, should that deal go through.Commissioner David Cole says having all of the parities coming together to work on that plan will make it a success. As it stands currently, should voters approve a 7 million dollar bond package in June, the DOT would buy and lease the tracks to a private operator. That would keep freight moving and preserve over 1,700 jobs that are on the line.
