Caterpillar Infestation on the Rise In Southern Maine

The Maine Forest Service is advising the towns of Topshan, Bath, West Bath, Brunswick, and Bowdoinham to be alert for widespread infestations of browntail moth caterpillars. The caterpillar is toxic and can leave people with respiratory problems and poison ivy-like skin rashes.Additionally, moth counts rose sharply last year and caterpillars are now emerging early from their nests because of the mild winter and the early warm spring. Finally, due to the lack of foliage on the trees, these caterpillars are crawling across lawns, shrubs and into homes in search for food.
