Stillwater Lumber Fire

Several crews responded to a fire at Stillwater Lumber this morning on the Bennoch Road in Old Town. The building housed machinery, wood chips and uncut lumber.Officials say one of the challenges they faced was the diesel machinery. They say as everything burned, the oils made it difficult to put out the flames. The Environmental Protection Agency has been called in to make sure none of the oil has gotten into the waterways.Officials say they expect the building to be a total loss. But the owners were insured and expect it to be about six months before they can re-open.About 17 employees worked out of that building. They say the retail side of the building will remain open, they just won’t be able to cut anything new or run any of the major equipment.
