MaineGeneral Receives Large Gift

Maine’s third-largest hospital is getting a $35 million gift. MaineGeneral Health announced Friday that the donation is from the Harold Alfond Foundation, named for the late Dexter Shoe Co. founder who left his life savings to the foundation. The money will go toward the construction of a new hospital in Augusta, pending state approval of the MaineGeneral Health’s certificate-of-need application. Some of the money would also go toward renovations at MaineGeneral’s Thayer campus facility in Waterville. MaineGeneral CEO Scott Bullock said building a new hospital is critical in attracting primary and specialty doctors so residents won’t have to travel to Bangor or Portland for certain medical services. Bullock said the donation is the largest in MaineGeneral’s history.(AP)
