Machete Attack Trial Begins

The trial of a man accused of a machete attack that left a father and daughter in Pittston permanently injured is under way.Opening arguments in the trial of Daniel Fortune, 22, lasted much of the morning in Somerset County Superior Court.Charges against him include attempted murder. He’s accused of breaking into the home of William Guerrette of Pittston two years ago and attacking Guerrette and his daughter, who was 10 at the time.Prosecutor Alan Kelly says the attack was motivated by money and Fortune’s attempt to avoid jail.Just two weeks before the attack, Fortune was scheduled to be in court on theft charges. He stole a safe from the Guerrette home a year earlier and was facing jail time because he didn’t show up in court.Fortune’s foster brother Leo Hylton, 20, was sentenced in February to 50 years in prison for his role in the attack. The defense claims it was all Hylton’s doing.
