State Accepting Applications for Marijuana Dispensaries

(AP) – Maine state government is accepting applications from nonprofit corporations to become one of eight new medical marijuana dispensaries. The Department of Health and Human Services announced it’s accepting applications now that rules for how dispensaries will be selected have been established.Maine voters last November approved a referendum proposal that changes Maine’s medical marijuana law and makes Maine the fifth state to allow retail dispensaries where patients can buy pot with a doctor’s prescription.Application fees are $15,000, and those not chosen will have allbut $1,000 returned. This issue was just discussed at a meeting at Bangor City Hall.An infrastructure committee and citizen review panel talked about a city council move to hold off establishing medical marijuana dispenseries. The committee ended up voting in favor of a 90 day moratorium on dispenseries. They will revisit the issue at a committee meeting in June.
