UMaine Gets One Step Closer to Renovated Memorial Gym

Tim Throckmorton

Thanks to a bond package, and a generour private contribution, UMaine is more than half-way to getting a new home court for its basketball teams. The 7-million dollars in bond money is enough to start a major building project on the Orono campus. Many would say that overhauling this fieldhouse is long overdue. Changing the Memorial Gym is also due for a facelift and that pleases the Umaine basketball coaches. There were architectural drawings done four years ago. this is not what a new Memorial Gym would necessarily look like, but it does show the the possibilities for the sides of the building expanded so that seating can be increased. This new home for games would once again be the same as the teams practice area. Former Umaine basketball player Dick Collins has pledged one million dollars. It’s gonna be spectacular in that it will elevate campus and it will make people from Maine proud of the facility that we play basketball in.At the same time we have a long way to go to realize the entire project but it certainly is an exciting time and we appreciate having that help. They still need to raise another 6 million dollars for the project which they hope to get started this summer.
