UMaine finds fraternity in violation of the University’s hazing policies

The University of Maine has found a campus fraternity in violation of the University’s hazing policies. The fraternity Sigma Chi is on disciplinary probation through May 31, 20-11 after 19-year-old Joshua Gilmore went missing while trying to locate an item behind a building on campus, and got lost in the woods for more than eight hours. Police and fire departments from surrounding towns along with the Maine Warden Service and over 200 student volunteers all searched for Gilmore. He was found with symptoms of hypothermia. A review by UMaine’s Division of Student Affairs found the item Gilmore was looking for did not exist. The University is requiring Sigma Chi to develop a “New Member Education Road Show” to be used as a model for the UMaine Greek community, and has been banned from other greek activities.
