Some grade-school kids Downeast are years away from graduating. But they might have a better idea of what they want to do when they grow up thanks to a job fair in Machias Wednesday.Meghan Hayward has the story.” We’re having a job fair for grade school kids. We have about 15 grade schools here.”The Machias Savings Bank has been sponsoring the job fair at the University of Maine in Machias for several years.Organizers say it has grown bigger each year. And they’re happy to give the opportunity to local kids.” I think it’s extremely important because the kids around here don’t get to see as much. Even what Bangor has to offer, the kids don’t get to see that. So by bringing in these different organizations and different companies to show it really helps the kids understand there’s more out there.”Kids got to see a variety of careers and even got to ask some questions.” What would happen if I was late multiple times?”” Do you work on weekends and holidays?”The kids were excited to be at the fair.” I learned that pretty much there’s a whole wide world out there and possibilities and I just have to choose one of those jobs to make my community better or be a big part of it.”Some even know what they might like to do when they’re done with school.” I might want to join the Army or something close to that. Maybe be an engineer or maybe even work for this news channel.”” The Army, I liked that one too.”Some of the careers the kids got to consider – cosmetology, State Police, even TV-5 was on hand to answer questions about the news.Organizers say they hope to continue hosting the fair and inspiring children to one day join the job force.
