Brewer’s Archer Block to be Demolished for Park

The city of Brewer is planning to get rid of an aging building in the center of town, in favor of something a little more welcoming to visitors. The Archer Block is a historic property at the corner of Wilson and North Main Streets. For several years city officials have been working with the owners of the building, and say now they’re close to making a purchase. The city’s economic development director tells us they plan to demolish the structure and put in a small park. Behind it will be space for parking they say is needed downtown. They hope to move forward with the project as soon as possible.”When people drive across the bridge it’s their first view of Brewer. We want to make sure it’s something that’s attractive and appealing, and that’s not the way it is right now,” says D’arcy Main-Boyington, director of economic development for Brewer.City officials are also working with the Maine Historic Preservation, which will photograph and document the building before it’s torn down.
