A former University of Maine President has passed away. Frederick Hutchinson served as U-Maine’s president from 1992 to 1997. Hutchinson’s ties to the University extend far beyond that: he was the first member of his family in Atkinson to go to college, earning a degree from U-Maine. He went on to serve as a professor, a dean, and vice president at the University.Hutchinson also worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development and was provost for Ohio State University. A spokesperson for U-Maine says Hutchinson died Wednesday afternoon at a Bangor Hospital. He’s survived by his wife and two daughters. Hutchinson was 79.
