Mice From Jackson Lab Aboard Space Shuttle Discovery

The space shuttle Discovery is headed to the international space station, with some Maine natives on board.Sixteen mice from the Jackson Lab in Bar Harbor are along for the ride. They’ll be observed to help scientists understand the long-term effects of being in space on the immune system’s ability to fight infections. There will also be a colony of the mice kept on ground, to compare their immune systems to the ones onboard.”The goal is to see how the immune system functions and changes in a space environment. So whatever the discovery she makes in these mice could very well be useful for designing programs for human beings traveling in space so they can protect their immune systems.”The experiment is being conducted by a professor from the Northern California Institute for Research and Education.
