A landmark sandwich shop in downtown Bangor is closing. Epi Sub and Pizza will serve up its last meal this Saturday. The owner says he just doesn’t have the finances to make it work. Bob Honea and his wife bought the business and the building it’s in, last August. He says since then, they’ve tried a number of ways to bring in more customers, including an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday mornings. Epi’s has been in downtown Bangor since 1991 – started by the man who first opened the business in Bar Harbor. Honea says his wife made the decision just this morning to close after a potential buyer for the business said the couple probably wouldn’t be able to keep it going much longer. Honea says seven people work at the shop, “so it was tough even to extend the hours without staff enough. And that’s one of the things we really wanted to do. This building has a lot of square footage so one of the big plans, the grand plan, was to have a pub in here. Unfortunately, our resources ran out before that was possible.”Honea says the shop will open at 10 a.m. Saturday and close for the last time at 4 p.m.He says the restaurant is up for sale but he and his wife would like to try to hold on to the building and lease the space. Two other businesses currently rent the bottom floor of the building.
