Cause Unknown in Fire That Burned Antiques in Newport

Investigators say there’s too much damage to know what started a raging fire in a vacant building in Newport. It was the second fire for crews in 24 hours. The call came in to the corner of Golf Course Road and Bar L Road about 9:30 Thursday night. When firefighters arrived the building was already up in flames and the roof was starting to cave in. Crews from Newport as well as seven other departments worked for about five hours to put out the flames. We’re told the building was being used to store antiques the owner was planning to sell. Crews were called back to the scene later in the day when the fire flared up again.Newport Fire Department Lieutenant Adam Noyes says, “We had an excavator come in that helped us knock the building down. It’s great then, but it the long run, it does cause some havoc because some of the walls fall on top and there’s still fire burning underneath it that we can’t get to.”An investigator with the state Fire Marshal’s office says the cause of the fire can’t be determined. For years, the building was known as the Bar L Ranch. We’re told most recently it was a fabric shop before it was turned into personal storage.
