Bangor Doctor Buys Church Building in Orono

Catherine Pegram

A doctor in Bangor and her husband are now the owners of a church in Orono. Dr. Fariba Dayhim and her husband, Shahram, bought the former home of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Main Street. The Catholic Diocese closed the church more than a year ago because of a dwindling parish and repair bills of up to $1 million. Dayhim says she’s not sure what they’ll do with the church itself. For now, the couple plans to live in the rectory building, then fix up the convent and move there. Dayhim says they also want to repair the church as much as possible to keep it from deteriorating any more. She says the property has a lot of potential and they’d like to maintain the architecture of it but they don’t want to rush in to deciding what they’ll do with it.
