Waldo County YMCA Getting Ready for 37th Annual Passy Canoe Race

The 37th Annual Passagassawakeag Canoe Race is being held in Waldo County on Saturday. For the last 32 years, the Waldo County YMCA has organized the race. Last Saturday, for the Saint George River Race they had about 120 boats. For the Passy they’re expecting even more. Dale Cross – Race Director”It’s really a spring activity sort of between the hard winter that we have here in Maine and the beautiful summers that we have here in Maine.”Both the Saint George and the Passy raise money for the Waldo County YMCA. the proceeds go owards financial aid that allows underprivilidged families to use the programs and facilities at the Waldo County Y.”These two races really help us with doing that and we’re hoping to raise $5000 for that cause.”With the forecast looking clear for Saturday and temperatures in the 60′s by the afternoon, Cross and the YMCA are eaglery awaiting the 37th Annual Passy Canoe Race.”I think this year with the water and the weather we’re going to be the biggest race that we’ve had in a lot of years and we’re really looking forward to that.”They are still taking registrations for the Passy. You can stop by the Waldo County YMCA to pre-register or on Saturday morning you can show up at the start of the race on the Savage Road in Waldo and sign up between 8:30 and 10:30. If the weather cooperates they’re expecting record numbers and a whole lot of fun in Waldo.
