Lecture on Asian Longhorned Beetle

A bug that threatens Maine’s maple syrup industry was the topic of discussion in Orono Friday. The Asian Longhorned Beetle feeds on maple trees and can reduce the amount of sap.Allison Kanoti with the Maine Forest Service gave the lecture on the beetles.Kanoti says the beetles will eventually kill the maple trees because they don’t have any natural enemies to keep them under control.Kanoti also told folks how they can help keep the beetles away.” One thing they can do is not take their firewood long distances because Asian Longhorned beetles an other insect pests will travel in firewood. So we recommend that in Maine people don’t move firewood more than 50 miles.”The beetle is easily recognizable. It’s a large bug that has a shiny black color with white dots.
