Alternative Spring Break

Another spring break has wound down, and college students have returned to campus. While some breakers used the time to soak up the sun, others took part in “alternative spring break”.Alternative spring break is just that. Instead of taking a vacation, students go on trips centered around community service. The student run program is thriving at the University of Maine. The student organization started at the university thirteen years ago as a group of six students who wanted to serve and help others.Student leader Rebecca Workman says the group has since grown to about 90 students and they take eight different trips each year to places like New York, Tennessee and Florida. The students fund raise throughout the year to go on these trips. The student’s next international alternative spring break will be in May.
