A judge says a 33-year-old man accused of cutting a pregnant woman with a knife at a coffee shop in downtown Bangor is not competent to stand trial. Instead, Jason Dean has been committed to Riverview Psychiatric Hospital in Augusta. Penobscot County Deputy District Attorney Mike Roberts says Dean could still go on trial, though, if he improves within the next year. Dean is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. He’s accused of walking into Java Joe’s on Central Street last March and using a steak knife to cut the victim’s neck. The woman was working behind the counter. She was treated at a local hospital and released the same day.Roberts says a final report on Dean’s mental capacity will be issued in a year.
