Maine Pilots Honored in D.C. 

Three women from Maine were among two-hundred female World War II pilots honored in Washington, D.C. Wednesday.Edith Beal of Bridgton, Betty Brown of Skowhegan and Phyllis Paradis of Bass Harbor were awarded the congressional gold medal.They were among the more than a thousand women to graduate from the Women Airforce Service Pilots training program.Their primary mission was to fly “noncombat missions” in the U.S. during the war.They were not considered members of the military for many years but that officially changed in 1977.
