Some good news for Down East Community Hospital in Machias. On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services held a second round of unscheduled inspections, and has recommended that the hospital’s operating license be fully restored.D.E.C.H. was notified in the summer of 2009 that they could lose Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. A judge appointed Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems to take over the hospital and bring it back into compliance. An inspection last December showed D.E.C.H. to be in compliance with national standards for critical access hospitals, and the hospital was able to continue receiving the federal funding.D.E.C.H. still needs to seat a new governing board, among other steps, before it can be released from under E.M.H.S.’s wing.
